Oriental Rug Cleaning and Care - Making Your Investment Last

Posted by Lance Esondi

Oriental rug cleaning and care is a simple process of following a few steps to keep it lasting for years. Don’t take your beloved rug and let it age due to a few common factors.

The day you purchase your rug you should start these simple cleaning and care steps. The cost of cleaning and caring for your rug are such much cheaper than the price of seeing your prized rug be ruined with age. Even repairing the rug will cost more than proper care.

Oriental Rug Cleaning and Care - The Process

The sun is going to ruin your rug if you leave it in direct sunlight. To prevent this do your best to put your oriental rug in areas where there isn’t as much sunlight or cover windows that show too much sunlight onto your rug. You can also flip your rug around so that one side isn’t soaking in all the sun all the time. This will help your rugs colors last longer.

Watch out for areas where you rug is walked on. Sometimes one side of the rug is walked on all the time while the other doesn’t get as much attention. This is known as uneven wear. Make sure you flip the rug around from time to time just like in the sun damage tip.

Simply vacuuming a rug makes it last longer. Dirt wears on a rug over time. The less dirt, the longer you will have your oriental rug. But you have to know how to vacuum a rug. Don’t just vacuum the top side, but also the bottom side of the rug. Why? Because most of the dirt is on the bottom of the rug. Getting out the dirt from both sides will offer more quality care for your rug.

Be careful when you vacuum a rug though. Although it can be a preventative measure, it can cause a lot of problems. Make sure that when you vacuum that you try to use a vacuum extension such as the hose. A vacuum which is made for thicker carpets can sometimes be too harsh on the rug because of the power brush. A hose is better for the rug. It is easier to maneuver especially if you have fringe on the rug. One of the worst things is to have your fringe twisted into your vacuum.

Get your oriental rug a rug pad. Rug pads aren’t necessarily for comfort. They are there to hold the rug in place not allowing it to bunch up on itself. A pad will extend the life of the rug over time.
